Why night trains are having a renaissance
After decades of decline, Europe's overnight rail network is growing again. ÖBB Nightjet has expanded dramatically since 2020, European Sleeper launched its Brussels–Prague–Berlin route, and new routes are being announced every year as the flight-shame movement pushes travellers toward lower-carbon options.
The numbers make sense: a couchette from Vienna to Rome costs €29–59 booked ahead, covers 1,200 km overnight, and eliminates both a hotel night (saving €60–120) and a wasted travel day. The equivalent flight, once you factor in airport transfers and check-in time, often takes 6+ hours door to door and emits roughly 10× the CO₂.
Couchette, sleeper, or seat — which should you book?
Seat (from ~€19): A reclining seat in a standard carriage. Fine for shorter overnight journeys (under 8h) if you can sleep sitting up. Not recommended for long-haul routes like Vienna–Rome.
Couchette (from ~€29): The sweet spot for most travellers. A shared open compartment with 4 or 6 fold-down bunks. You get a pillow, blanket, and small luggage rack. Privacy curtains on some operators. Couchettes are social and budget-friendly — the classic backpacker experience.
Private sleeper cabin (from ~€59): A lockable room with 1, 2, or 3 beds. On Nightjet, includes breakfast delivered to your cabin, power sockets, a small washbasin, and a wake-up call. Worth every cent for couples, families, or anyone who needs proper sleep. Deluxe sleeper (from ~€99): Private en-suite bathroom on select ÖBB Nightjet routes. Hotel-quality comfort on rails.
Rule of thumb: Couchette for journeys under 10h or if you're on a budget. Private sleeper for journeys over 10h or if you value your sleep.

Using your Interrail or Eurail pass on night trains
Both the Interrail Global Pass and Eurail Global Pass are valid on most European night trains. Here's how it works:
- 1. The journey is covered by your pass — you don't pay the base ticket price.
- 2. You must pay a reservation fee for your berth. This is separate from the pass and varies by operator and berth type:
- - ÖBB Nightjet: €10 (seat), €20–29 (couchette), €35–65 (sleeper), €65–99 (deluxe sleeper)
- - European Sleeper: €10–15 (seat), €20–35 (couchette)
- - SNCF overnight: €10–20 (couchette)
- 3. Book via the operator's website or Rail Planner app — make sure to select 'I have an Interrail/Eurail pass' during booking.
- 4. The night train uses one travel day on flexi passes. On continuous passes, no travel day is consumed — the journey is automatically covered.
How to book night trains — step by step
1. Decide your route and dates — night trains have fixed departure times (typically 19:00–22:00, arriving 06:00–10:00 the following morning).
2. Book as early as possible — sleeper cabins on popular Nightjet routes sell out 60–90 days ahead in summer. Opening date is typically 6 months before departure on ÖBB.
- 3. Use the operator's own website for the best prices:
- - ÖBB Nightjet: nightjet.com
- - European Sleeper: europeansleeper.eu
- - DB (Germany): bahn.de
- - SJ (Sweden): sj.se
- - SNCF (France): sncf-connect.com
4. Trainline and Rail Europe aggregate bookings across operators — convenient but sometimes add a booking fee.
5. Check luggage policies — most night trains have a luggage allowance and overhead/under-bunk storage. Large backpacks are usually fine; excessive luggage is not.
6. Bring basics: earplugs, an eye mask, and a light sleeping layer even if you have a couchette blanket.
