How to book
🛏️
Berth types & prices
Nightjet offers three options on most routes: seat (reclinable, cheapest, shared carriage), couchette (6-berth shared compartment, pillow and blanket included, most popular), and sleeper cabin (private 1–3 berth room with breakfast, towels, and a power socket). Couchettes start from ~€29, sleeper cabins from ~€79 booked early.
🎟️
Interrail & Eurail pass
Most Nightjet routes are covered by Interrail and Eurail Global Passes. You still pay a reservation fee on top: ~€6 for a seat, ~€20–30 for a couchette, ~€35–55 for a sleeper cabin. Book reservations at nightjet.com or via the Rail Planner app — not all routes allow pass reservations through third-party sites.
📅
When to book
Sleeper cabins on popular summer routes (Vienna→Rome, Vienna→Amsterdam) sell out 60–90 days ahead in July and August. Couchettes have more availability but also go fast on busy routes. Book as early as possible — Nightjet opens bookings up to 6 months before departure. Prices rise sharply in the final weeks.
☕
What's included
Sleeper cabin passengers receive a continental breakfast delivered to their cabin, plus a welcome drink. Couchette passengers also get breakfast on most routes. Seats do not include meals but have access to the dining car. All berths include pillow and blanket. Sleeper cabins include a towel, toiletries, and a power socket.
🧳
Luggage
No luggage limit or hold — bring what you can fit in the overhead rack or under your berth. A medium suitcase fits easily in couchette and sleeper compartments. Large bags can be stored in the designated luggage area at the end of each carriage.
📱
Book direct
Book at nightjet.com for the best fares and full berth availability. The ÖBB app also works well. Third-party aggregators (Trainline, Rail Europe) have limited Nightjet inventory — especially for sleeper cabins. If a route shows sold out on an aggregator, check nightjet.com directly.
ÖBB Nightjet operates 12 overnight routes across Europe, connecting Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and beyond. The network is the largest night train operation in Europe and continues to expand.
A couchette is a shared open compartment with 6 fold-down bunks — social, affordable, and includes a pillow, blanket and breakfast on most routes. A sleeper cabin is a lockable private room with 1–3 beds, breakfast, towels, toiletries, and a power socket. Sleeper cabins cost significantly more (from ~€79) but offer full privacy.
Yes. An Interrail or Eurail Global Pass covers the journey on all Nightjet routes. You still need to pay a reservation fee for your berth — approximately €6 for a seat, €20–30 for a couchette, and €35–55 for a sleeper cabin. Book reservations at nightjet.com.
For popular summer routes like Vienna→Rome or Vienna→Amsterdam, book sleeper cabins 2–3 months in advance. July and August sell out fastest. Couchettes have more availability but also go fast on busy routes. Nightjet opens bookings up to 6 months before departure.
Most Nightjet routes run daily. A few routes — such as Vienna→Brussels — run 3 days per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday). Check the specific timetable for your route at nightjet.com.
